I think this is a good read...it made me think 'outside the box.' I've come to believe that we all tend to change personal outlook on many things we once thought were trivial; once having a child with differences of any kind. The article cites a March 2011 entry in “The Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal.” They studied eye movements while people looked at pictures of faces with and without a cleft. Of the 63 participants viewing the pictures, 33 were born with cleft lip and palate and 30 were not. What I found most-interesting is that the study revealed; in comparison to participants not having facial differences, individuals born with clefts spent more time looking at photos of other cleft-affected people.

The author described how we look at a face. We usually focus on main features, switching from one another in a pattern. The normal pattern is usually from top of face to bottom focusing mostly on the eyes, then nose, then mouth and so forth. They also note documentation of how people will focus on a facial feature that draws to their “emotions.” With this in mind I started thinking about the way I look at someone's face, and how it has changed over recent years. In the past I would start at the eyes and continue once-round the face, but mainly focus on peoples eyes (as my mom thought me to always look people in the eyes). I've found however, that since my son Nathan was born with a cleft lip and palate, I tend to look at the ridge of the lips as well as the shape of peoples' nose, whether or not they have a cleft.

Both groups of individuals spent more time looking at pictures of people affected by clefts, but the time-spent by participants with facial differences was remarkable. When I think of a reference they make to people focusing first and longer on features that draw to their emotions --- it sure makes sense that not only those who were born with a cleft, but also those who have shared or experienced though someone vicariously (like myself – a parent), spend more time focusing on the feature that we can relate to emotionally.

	Bianca Turner (Program Director)

Please follow the link below to read the article yourself!

This article I read was posted in Medical News Today: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/222459.php

It has cited a journal entry from The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal:http://www.cpcjournal.org/

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Technology-Used-to-Assess-How-People-View-Faces-With-a-Cleft-Lip-and-Palate/blog.htm

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Technology-Used-to-Assess-How-People-View-Faces-With-a-Cleft-Lip-and-Palate/blog.htm

photo

Judy is super excited about preschool :)

http://MiCleft.com/view/photo/photos.htm?id=9158FDDF-04D7-4E67-81C5-DE30592D32A4

http://MiCleft.com/view/photo/photos.htm?id=9158FDDF-04D7-4E67-81C5-DE30592D32A4

RE:Feeding Supplies

One of your members on FB shared this bottle us the Nuby Natural Touch Squeezable. I wanted to follow-up on your comment. You're absolutely correct, and I'm so glad that you've mentioned the Latham device. While there are several means of intervention and prosthetic palatal devices available, some are invasive and others not - the Latham is a perfect example as it requires surgical implantation.

As for ear (eustachian) tubes; there are countless types used today, however, there are two general techniques (both requiring short-acting anesthesia) most-preferred; one that is non-invasively implanted and often referred to as a "M" tube, and another that is sutured into place and often referred to as a "T" tube.

Great points - I hope others come forward so that everyone can enjoy discussions and gain knowledge!

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Common-Surgical-Procedures/wiki.htm

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Common-Surgical-Procedures/wiki.htm

RE:Common Surgical Procedures

I'm going to add one more that Nathan had, his first surgery at 3 months was for both his Latham device and for ear tuber.

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Common-Surgical-Procedures/wiki.htm

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Common-Surgical-Procedures/wiki.htm

RE:Child (day) Care

	Great questions!

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Child-day-Care/wiki.htm

http://MiCleft.com/pt/Child-day-Care/wiki.htm

	The Pretty Big Sister!

http://MiCleft.com/member/Default.asp?page=photos&p=947B79CF-0FF7-49A7-BA60-A85547872C9C&cmd=full&id=05278750-5F38-4618-A099-D6BDDA7EE859

http://MiCleft.com/member/Default.asp?page=photos&p=947B79CF-0FF7-49A7-BA60-A85547872C9C&cmd=full&id=05278750-5F38-4618-A099-D6BDDA7EE859

	Looks so grown up!
